The victim is a 38-year-old resident of Jogeshwari who had come to visit her parents in Ghatkopar West. On Saturday morning, at 9:30 am, she was on her way to the public washroom when the accused — identified as Shamsher Mohammad Ansari alias Gunga (21) and Sohail Feroz Shaikh (19) — spotted her.

They were loitering in the vicinity, looking for a target. When the victim neared the washroom, Sohail snatched her gold mangalsutra (weighing around a tola) and handed it to Shamsher, before both fled the scene. The victim raised an alarm but the duo managed to escape.
When the Ghatkopar police began to investigate the case, the woman described the crooks to the cops and mentioned their hair.
She told the cops that both had unique hairstyles and even specified that one of them looked like he had an umbrella on his head. With this one clue, the cops went about Ashok Nagar and questioned the locals, even visiting local barbers for clues. Soon enough, the police learnt that the culprits resided in that very area, and within hours of the incident the boys were caught.

With the description of the duo, Shamsher was picked up first. He confessed to the crime and also gave the whereabouts of Sohail.”
The cops also recovered the mangalsutra from the accused. API Yogesh Thakur said, “When we detained the duo, at first they told us that they had thrown the chain away, but when we searched Shamsher’s house, we found it there.”
