The incident took place on Saturday and the police allege that the childless accused fancied having a baby boy, so she hatched a plan to kidnap one.

The accused has been identified as Shabana Khatoon Khan and was nabbed red-handed by the infant's mother with the help of the hospital staff. According to police officials, at around 7 am on Saturday, Shakuntala Kanojia, who is resident of Ramabai Nagar in Ghatkopar, had got her son to Rajawadi hospital for a routine health check up. “At the time that Kanojia was standing in a queue at the hospital, the baby pooped in his pants. While she was trying to clean the mess, the accused approached her on the pretext of helping her,” said an officer.

When Kanojia went to the bathroom to tidy up, leaving her baby with Khan, the accused fled from the spot. “Khan went out of the hospital and escaped in an auto-rickshaw. Kanojia followed her along with hospital staff and nabbed her at a signal near Somaiya College,” said the officer.

Khan has been booked under Section 363 (kidnapping) and remanded to police custody.
