Mumbai power worries could be nullified to a large extent if the city utilises the trash at Deonar dumping ground generate electricity. According to a report submitted by Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd to the BMC recently, the waste can help generate 25 to 30 megawatts of electricity.

Multiple fires had broken out at the dumping ground earlier this year leading to uproar. Even the Union Ministry of Environment had taken note of it and asked the BMC to submit an action plan for long term measures to be taken. The BMC had sought the firm's help as a consultant.

In a presentation made on Tuesday, the firm made some of the following observations:

1. About 3000 metric tonnes of waste from the dump can be scientifically processed to turn it into 25 to 30 MW of energy. It will require an area of 14 hectares and will be the first of a kind project in the country. The entire project will cost Rs 1 crore.

2. Tenders are expected to be floated in August and work orders will be given in December.
