Mohali: South Africa finished the first day of the opening Test match against India on 28 for two trailing the hosts by 173 runs at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium here on Thursday.


South Africa batted for 20 overs to score 28/2. Elgar (13 not out) and captain Hashim Amla (9 not out) were at the crease at stumps.


Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the wicket-takers for India.

Earlier, left-arm spinner Dean Elgar bowled beautifully to claim a four-wicket haul as South Africa dismissed India for 201 shortly after tea to secure an upper hand on the opening day of the first cricket Test at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

Elgar returned figures of 4/22 in eight overs while fellow spinner Imran Tahir (2/23) and pacer Vernon Philander (2/38) also bowled well. Off-spinner Simon Harmer (1/51) and fast bowler Kasigo Rabada (1/30) also claimed a wicket each.

Opener Murali Vijay was the highest scorer for the hosts with 75.

India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa in the first cricket Test at PCA Stadium, here today.

India have left out paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Stuart Binny. Ishant Sharma is also sitting out to serve one match ban on him.

South Africa have handed Test debut to paceman Kagiso Rabada, who made an impression in T20 and ODI series.
