A 20-year-old Bandra resident and student of Peddar Road’s Sophia College, who went missing on Wednesday and left behind a suicide note, was finally located on Friday. She told the police that she had been put up at a friend’s home in Nerul.

According to crime branch officials, the girl had run away from home to escape altercations with her parents. Regular fights broke out in their family. Unable to cope with the situation, she had slipped into mild depression.

Her parents however, claim they had no other option but to reprimand their daughter since they feared she was going astray. “Her parents claimed she was not concentrating on academics and would while away the time with friends,” said a police officer investigating the case.

On Wednesday, at 12.30 pm, the girl reached college and left her bag, with her mobile phone and suicide note in it, in her classroom. When the phone was retrieved, it had gory pictures of her mutilated wrist. On the note, she had mentioned the reason the self-inflicted injury - recurrent fights with her parents.

According to the police, she had meticulously planned the plot with her friends and moved to one of her female friend’s home. A police officer said, “She made sure no evidence was left behind. She even deleted call logs, contacts and messages from her friend’s phone.

She was keeping a tab on the media and keenly tracing all developments in the case.” When the case had come to light, a special crime branch team along with officers from Gamdevi police station had swung into action. DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “We called all her friends for questioning.”

The friend she was staying with broke down during the interrogation and that’s what gave them the breakthrough. The girl has been reunited to her parents, and is receiving counseling. No case has been registered in the matter.
