Three women were handed a seven-term jail term last week for selling three minor girls in 2009.

DP Surana, sessions court judge, convicted Parul alias Parvati Chavan, Sadhana alias Sima Vishwajit Kaviraj and Parveen alias Soni Jahangir Shaikh under Section 372 (selling minor for the purpose of prostitution), sentenced them to imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 each. Vijay Malankar, public prosecutor, had examined around 17 witnesses, including a social worker who helped the police arrest the three women, and the minors.

As per the social worker’s testimony, he was tipped off in March 2009 about the three women trafficking in girls for prostitution. He then impersonated as a ‘customer’ and fixed a meeting with Parul for April 2 that year. Parul arrived with Sadhana and two minors, demanded Rs 90,000 for one child and Rs 30,000 for another. They decided on transacting the deal the next day at a restaurant in Ghatkopar.

The social worker then called in the police, who laid a trap for the traffickers.
