Gold bars worth over Rs 38 lakh seized at Mumbai airport

Authorities at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport seized 12 gold bars weighing about 1392 grams recently.


The bars were concealed in a baggage trolley. Further investigation is in progress.


 

This is not a first time that a airport officials intercepted gold smuggglers.

Last month, an 83-year-old man was intercepted on Tuesday night by the air intelligence unit (AIU) at the Mumbai international airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold bars worth Rs 19 lakh. He had concealed the gold in a tissue box in the toilet cabin.

In August, customs officials, on Monday, arrested a woman with gold bars worth Rs 64,38,960 hidden inside her under garments at Mumbai airport.

Also in August, Air India's senior Captain Vijay Pratap operating flight AI 932 from Jeddah to Mumbai was caught by Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs.

In July, Mumbai's Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) caught a Kenyan National with 7.5 kilogram smuggled gold worth Rs. 2.25 crore. He was caught near Hyatt Regency Hotel in Sahar.

In June, the officers of AIU on June 18 intercepted a passenger found to be carrying 14 gold bars of 100 gram each totally weighing 1400 gram and totally valued around Rs 39 lakh on his person strapped clandestinely around his waist by tapes.

In April, a Japanese man caught with 5-kg gold taped to his groin at Mumbai Airport. Buyers on the Internet had told him that the metal is valued more in India than in Tokyo.
