A 62-year-old woman from Colaba was duped of her gold ornaments by two men posing as cops, who told her about a murderer running loose in the area and asked her to give them her ornaments for safe-keeping. The woman, Basadevi Singh, later lodged an FIR with the Colaba police, who are now looking for the two men.

The incident happened on Saturday when the woman was out walking around 8.40am and two men aged between 30-35 years approached her at Azad Nagri in Colaba. “They told me they were cops and that a murder had been committed ahead. They said the killer was somewhere in the area and told me to give them my jewellery for safekeeping. They said they would return it to me once I was out of the ‘unsafe’ zone,” the woman’s statement said.

After she had handed over the jewellery, the duo told her to keep walking and that they were right behind her to protect her. After walking some distance, when the woman turned back, she saw that the two men had fled. When she raised an alarm, locals gathered at the spot and she found out that no murder had happened and it just was a trick to cheat her,” the police said.

“The woman has registered an FIR. A case under sections 420, 170 and 34 of the IPC was registered in the matter. We have been scanning CCTV footage of the area to identify the two men,” said senior inspector of Colaba police station, Vijay Dhopaokar.
