On the run for five months, a murder accused, who allegedly bribed police officials for a conjugal visit at a city hotel from where he later escaped, was finally nabbed by the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh police in Varanasi. Cops seized a car, a country-made revolver and seven live cartridges with dozens of SIM cards from him.

Hanumant Sadashiv Patil alias Prem, an undertrial, was lodged at Taloja Jail for the murder of CIDCO clerk Atul Mhatre in 2013. After escaping from a South Mumbai hotel in February this year, Prem moved to Bihar, where he was staying at one of his inmates' home. He, however, continuously changed his address to mislead the police. After a receiving a tip-off about Prem heading to Varanasi, the Navi Mumbai cops alerted the police team in Uttar Pradesh.

Following investigations, the STF got reliable information that Prem would be visiting Gilat Bazar area in Varanasi to look for a new accommodation. The police team laid a trap and found Prem getting down from his car. He was immediately caught and taken to Shivpur police station, where he was booked and arrested under the Arms Act. “He had changed his hairstyle and wanted to settle down in UP or Bihar to stay out of the police's net,” said an officer from the Navi Mumbai police.

In February, mid-day had reported how Prem's escape had left the Navi Mumbai police red-faced, resulting in suspension of 10 policemen, including an assistant police inspector. During a medical check-up at JJ Hospital, he had bribed policemen escorting him to allow him to meet his wife at a South Mumbai Hotel. However, he managed to flee from the hotel room.
