New Delhi: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her elder brother in northwest Delhi's Outram Lane area in the wee hours of Sunday in what police suspect was an attempted sexual assault.

According to police, the accused, who has been arrested, entered his sister's room in an inebriated condition around 1 AM and thrust open the door with his leg. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Vijay Singh said that the man killed the woman by inserting a rolling pin (belan) in her mouth and pressing her neck with his foot. The police suspect that the man had gone to his sister's room with an intention to sexually assault her but when she resisted, he lost his temper and in a fit of rage killed her.
The deceased was staying with her brother after she separated from her husband two years ago. Even the man had a strained relationship with his wife who was staying with her brother, the officer said.
The accused was known for his temper tantrums and according to the woman's 10-year-old son, had brutally beaten his sister on earlier occasions also, police said.
The deceased was staying with her brother in the same house but had moved to a room on the first floor on Saturday with her son. This had apparently enraged the man who went out for drinking with his brother-in-law and later came back to his sister's room.
After killing his sister, he brought her son to his room and slept beside his sister as he was regretting his act, police said. In the morning a PCR call was made by one of the neighbours and the accused was arrested from his house. "A case of murder has been registered and we are probing the motive behind the murder," Singh said.
