Developers who have delayed registering their projects with the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) before the deadline on July 31, don't want the government to levy a heavy penalty on them for the same.

While the authority is adamant on the penalty, they haven't decided on a fine yet. With no extension given to them for becoming RERA compliant, the builders now want the government authorities to be lenient on them with the amount. The authority is likely to decide on a penalty on Wednesday.

Developer's request
A developer, requesting anonymity said, "We have requested the authority to not charge heavy fines as the procedure was very lengthy and difficult to understand. Thus, there was a delay in registration. Many are ready to register it now as well and if the authorities cooperate, many more projects will become RERA compliant."

Vasant Prabhu, secretary of RERA told mid-day, "A good number of projects have been registered and the delayed projects will be charged penalty. However, the amount of penalty is not yet decided."

Complaints to come
The authorities are now waiting for complaints to come in from the citizens, which will be accepted online. Prabhu added, "We have not received complaints so far and now that the deadline has ended, complaints will start coming in.

All the complaints will have to be uploaded online. The aggrieved party will be given a hearing and the everything from the status of the case, along with the final orders, will be uploaded online." The RERA Act penalizes developers for not registering their ongoing projects, and has disallowed agents from marketing any project that does not have a RERA certificate.
