Desilting scam: BMC assures departmental inquiry against errant civic officials

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday was disrupted once again by the nullah-desilting scam. Opposition leaders cried foul saying that the civic administration is not taking action against its own employees, following which the BMC has assured that an FIR will be filed in the next two days against errant contractors.

Earlier this year, the BMC was rocked by allegations of corruption in the desilting of nullahs before monsoon. Corporators alleged that contractors had done shoddy work and cost the exchequer crores of rupees. The BMC had then initiated a preliminary inquiry following which 14 contractors were black listed.

Further, a detailed inquiry was done by the civic body under deputy municipal commissioner Vasant Prabhu and Chief engineer (bridges) S O Kori. The committee gave its report to the commissioner recently, after which corporators pressed for action.

The standing committee was marked by this demand following which additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh assured that an FIR will be filed against errant contractors indicted in the report in next two days. Besides, all the errant civic officials will face departmental inquiry.
