A boulder came crashing through the roof of the Hubli-LTT Express, jolting awake passengers who were on their way from Pune to Mumbai around 5.15 am today.
While there were no casualties, three passengers were injured in the mishap that occurred near Monkey Hill, near Lonavala. The railway police said that the three passengers -- Shivprasad Mallappa Hiremath, 27, a resident of Bhandup, Hussansab Beloki, 59, and Mohammad Asif, 25 -- all residents of Hubli, Karnataka, had been admitted to the Kalyan Railway Hospital and would later be shifted to Fortis Hospital in Kalyan.

The impact of the crash was such that it ripped open the roof of the train coach. The railway authorities said the soil of the adjoining hills may have loosened because of the heavy rain the area had witnessed over the last three days. It took the authorities a few hours to move the boulder from inside the compartment and send the train on its way.

Last month, on July 18, the CSMT-Hyderabad Express had derailed near Monkey Hill because of a similar incident; a boulder crashed on to the train following heavy rain. This boulder, however, did not fall inside the train.
