Arrest of 28-yr-old sees Mumbai police solve senior citizen's murder within 24 hrs

The Mumbai police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly killing a 65-year-old woman in suburban Mulund on Tuesday

The Mumbai police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly killing a 65-year-old woman in Mulund on Tuesday.


Investigations by Vikhroli police has revealed that the accused, identified as Melwyn Selvin reportedly killed Marry Swami in order to rob her jewellery.


Swami, who used to live at her Mulund (east) residence alone, was found seriously injured at her home by her neighbours on Tuesday morning. Once the neighbours informed the police, she was rushed to Mahatma Phule Hospital in Vikhroli, but declared dead on arrival.


The postmortem at Ghatkopar's Rajawadi Hospital revealed that she had been was strangled to death.

During investigation, the police discovered that the senior citizen was robbed of a gold chain and earrings worth Rs 75,000.

The Vikhroli police registered a case of murder and robbery and started focussing on people who used to frequent her home. It was during this line of investigation that their attention was directed towards the accused.

“A person, who is witness in the case, told the police that a few days ago while visiting her place he had taken along a person with him. On Wednesday, the police called this person, who was later identified as Bhandup resident Melwyn Selvin. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to having killed Swamy in order to rob her. He told the police that he came to realise she lived alone when he had visited her and had then decided to rob her,” said a police officer.

Swamy was allegedly strangled her to death with the help of a clutch wire. The police have recovered the wire and the stolen jewellery from Selvin’s possession, another officer said.
