Why jump to conclusions all over again, given what you know about how things ended the last time?

This happened a few years ago, so I am trying to process it and figure out what to do next. My boyfriend at the time hurt me a lot and we ended our relationship, after which he moved to another city, and I tried to move on. I found out much later that the fault was mine because I had misunderstood him and jumped to some conclusions. I didn't know what to do about this because he wasn't around, but I recently found out that he is back here and still single. Part of me feels as if he was right for me, but I don't know how to approach him and tell him that I was wrong. I want him to forgive me, but I am also worried because if he rejects my apology, I may feel hurt all over again and I am not sure I want to go through that same episode. What should I do?
If you were wrong, you should apologise. If he rejects your apology, that is his prerogative. Either way, this cannot be swept under the carpet if you want to reach out to him, so there is nothing else you can do. He may or may not agree to meet you, but you won't know where things stand between you two unless you take that necessary first step. Why jump to conclusions all over again, given what you know about how things ended the last time?

My boyfriend is very well off, but always brushes off my suggestions for expensive restaurants or holidays by saying he can't afford them. I don't know if he is testing me in some way and what I should do when he says these things to me.
Why not ask him, instead of assuming the worst? Financial issues are always tricky because they are so personal, but they should be taken seriously because they can cause serious harm to any relationship. He may be well off, but he may not have access to those funds.
