Srikanth scaled new heights when he became the first Indian male shuttler to reach the final and also the first to win a silver at the BWF World Championships. Among Indians, only PV Sindhu has fared better, bagging the coveted title in 2019. 

Reaching the BWF rank 1 is something that any player would drool over. Srikanth, thanks to his fierce determination and extreme tenacity, became only the second Indian male shuttler to become highest-ranked player in the world, after Prakash Padukone in April 2018. His compatriot, Saina Nehwal, was the only other Indian to reach the World No. 1 rank before him by far.

Srikanth’s excellence in the international circuit goes beyond words and his successful campaign at the Commonwealth Games is a living testimony. The 30-year-old has bagged two medals at the Commonwealth, both in the same edition. He won gold in the mixed team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. Besides, he won the silverware in the men’s singles, after he lost to the legendary Lee Chong Wei in the final, but his overall campaign earned massive praise.

Srikanth’s dedication to the sport knows no bounds. He has bagged two national awards for his overall contribution on the international stage. Srikanth was honoured with the Arjuna award back in 2015 for an extraordinary achievement in the field of badminton. A bigger moment of pride for the shuttler came three years later, incidentally, the same year when he became the World No. 1 player. He was then honoured with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India. 

Prior to his injury, Srikanth has had a hugely successful year in 2016, apart from his Olympic exploits, he has lifted titles on several occasions at the South Asian Games. He has bagged gold on three occasions at the South Asian Games. The first came in 2016 in the men’s singles event, the second gold also came in 2016 in the men’s team event, while the third followed in the 2019 edition of the same event.
