At 31, wrestler-politician Babita Phogat's life has seen a major change

Babita Phogat was born on November 20, 1989, in the village of Bhiwani located in Haryana.

Babita Phogat hails from the famous Phogat family in Haryana. A family which boasts of record-breaking wrestlers who have won medals for India at many international events.

Babita Phogat and her sisters have managed to bring about a change in the mindset of people in Haryana with regards to women pursuing their careers in different fields.

Babita Phogat's father Mahavir Singh Phogat was an amateur wrestler during his time and went on to coach his daughters to become professional wrestlers against all odds in a male-dominant society.

Babita Phogat is a professional Indian wrestler who has won a gold medal at the 2014 Commwealth Games and silver medals at the 2010 and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Babita's father Mahavir Singh Phogat is also the recipient of the Dronacharya Award.

The early life of the Phogat family was been showcased in the Bollywood blockbuster movie Dangal in 2016. In the film, Sanya Malhotra portrayed the role of Babita Phogat, Fatima Sana Shaikh played the role of Geeta Phogat while Aamir Khan played the role of their father Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Speaking about the film, Babita said, "Dangal movie wasn't an exaggeration. In fact, in reality, I and my sisters weren't even allowed to attend family weddings by my stringent father, if they came in between our training. We had nowhere to escape to when your own father is your coach."

During the Rio Olympics 2016, Babita was the final entrant for India in women's wrestling. However, Babita was eliminated in the first round.

It was in 2014 that Babita Phogat met Vivek Suhag during a wrestling event held in Delhi. Co-incidentally, Vivek again happened to meet Babita at her wrestling academy, where the latter was a tutor.

Babita Phogat and Vivek Suhag participated in the reality dance television show Nach Baliye 2019 season.

In June 2019, Babita Phogat announced her engagement to boyfriend Vivek Suhag after he proposed to her on national television in Haryanvi.

In November 2019, Babita Phogat tied the knot with Vivek Suhag.

In August 2019, Babita Phogat and her father Mahavir Singh Phogat made their foray into politics when they joined the BJP in Haryana but she lost to Sombir in October that year.

In October 2020, Babita Phogat resigned from he post as the Deputy Director in Haryana's Sports Department to actively join politics.

On her husband Vivek Suhag's birthday, Babita Phogat took to Instagram to share candid photos of the celebrations. She wrote, "Neither have you fallen from the skies nor have you been dropped from above. Where do we find people like you nowadays? You were made by order. Happy birthday to you, love."

Babita Phogat posted this photo with husband Vivek Suhag and wrote, "You always make me feel that I am the luckiest girl in the world!!"
