Wrestler Bajrang Punia, who will lead India's challenge in the Tokyo Olympics 65kg freestyle category, has found his own way to get inspired and motivated during Covid-19.

Punia, 27, who clinched gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, doesn't need a psychologist to enthuse him. "It was definitely a tough period. I never spent such a long time at home. But I kept myself motivated by reading books. My friends, partner, physio and coaches always motivated me. I don't take help from a psychologist because I think I am lucky to have people who always motivate me. You should just be in a positive frame of mind, think about wise things, do good work and this will help you be positive all the time," Punia said during a virtual press conference facilitated by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Saturday.

However, Punia, who won a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan last month, wants more bouts under his belt in Russia ahead of the July 23-August 8 Tokyo Games.

"I just need sparring partners. That's why I made a plan to train in Russia. When you fight with your partner in bouts only then you come to know [your strengths]. I am just hoping that till the Olympics, I get good partners and have tough training sessions with them," said Punia, who is currently training at his home in Sonepat, Haryana.

Punia reckoned that no one is a gold medal favourite in the 65kg category. "I want to do my best at the Olympics. I have worked hard on my fitness. My mantra is to fight hard during my bouts. I use my power and endurance for my comebacks. However, whoever has their day and the blessings of God on a given day will win the medal," Punia remarked.
