Former India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar appealed to parents and coaches of all upcoming cricketers to play fair and avoid indulging in age-fudging activities.

Gavaskar Jr, who was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of the Seth Gordhandas Shield and B Khichadia inter-school tournament at Khar Gymkhana on Thursday advised budding cricketers to focus on playing hard.

"If you are 16 or 18 there is no point doing well in the under-14 category. When you are 22 and playing at a higher level, it doesn't matter how old you are, what matters is performance," Rohan said during the function.

Later, talking to mid-day, Rohan said that parents and coaches should be accountable if they do anything wrong.

"Obviously the kids are too young to differentiate between right and wrong. It is the responsibility of every parent and coach to put them on the right track," he said.

Recently, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) banned six players during summer vacation coaching camps for producing fake birth certificates and filed police complaints against them. MCA's Cricket Improvement Committee member and former Mumbai skipper Amol Muzumdar said age-fudging has to end.

"If you want Mumbai cricket to prosper like before, then age fudging should stop. It comes from parents, sometimes from the kids themselves and shockingly, even from the coaches," said Muzumdar, a domestic giant.
