Continuing on with a sad sporting event (the demise of Vasoo Paranjape and Sumedh Shah) was the Novak Djokovic loss in the final of the US Open. A win here would have meant he was the first player after Rod Laver in 1969 to win the Grand Slam of all four tennis majors. He was swept away by the power of Daniil Medvedev, who played some of his best tennis in this tournament.

Greatest of them all

Sometimes, the final step is the steepest as Djokovic found out but by getting to all four finals he certainly made the case for him to be called the greatest of them all. In fact, Medvedev at the trophy presentation ceremony called Djokovic the greatest player in tennis history.

Impossible Slam

With the way new talent is coming through, a calendar Grand Slam looks less and less likely and that's why Djokovic's loss in the US Open final is so sad. But then, as we have seen, with Sir Don Bradman's last innings, where he was bowled second ball for a duck when he needed just four runs to finish with an average of 100 in Test cricket, that sport does not always have fairy tale endings.
