Moscow: German star Alexander Zverev won his first career title when he edged past the top seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the Saint Petersburg ATP final.

The 27th seed came into the final with full confidence after beating Czech Thomas Berdych on Saturday. In 39 minutes, he broke world number three Wawrinka's serve twice for a one set lead, reports Xinhua on Sunday.

In the second set, Wawrinka also broke twice to level at one-all teenager broke back twice in the deciding set and claimed victory in two hours 23 minutes.

With the loss, US Open champion Wawrinka, who has won 11 of his previous appearances in the ATP finals was stopped from capturing his 12th career title in Saint Petersburg.
