Nadal was a set down and 5-3 behind in a second-set tie-break but recovered from that threatening position to win 4-6, 7-6, (8/6), 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court.

Rosol's brave challenge was finally ended after two hours and 44 minutes.

Nadal said: "It was very important, the second set. To play against a player like Rosol, two sets down, big server, it would have been big, big danger.

"My goal was not Rosol. My goal was to try to play well. It doesn't matter if it's Rosol or another player who beat me in the past or not."

Gasquet tumbles
Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios saved nine match points in a epic encounter with Richard Gasquet before downing the French 13th seed in a five-set thriller.

The youngest man left in the draw at 19 years and 70 days old came back from two sets down to win 3-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-5, 10-8.

Worth the wait
Meanwhile, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was made to wait for his victory over Sam Querrey, coming through an epic clash 4-6, 7-6, (7/2), 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 14-12 which had been held over from Wednesday.
