India's sports stars sent out their wishes for Makar Sankranti, the festival of harvesting which is known differently in different parts of the country. Some of its more famous versions of the festival are Pongal in Kerala, Lohri in Punjab and Bihu in the north east. India's two-time Olympic medal-winning wrestler Sushil Kumar wrote on his Twitter handle: "May this festival of harvest bring along a promise of life filled with brightness, peace and harmony. Wishing #MakarSakranti #Lohri #Pongal to you all."

India cricketer Suresh Raina wrote: "The season of harvest is here. Sending you all warm greetings on the happy occasion of #MakaraSankranti and #Pongal. May the almighty bless you all with the best of health, wealth and prosperity." Star boxer Vijender Singh also sent out his wishes, in Hindi.
