Suranjoy, Sumit clear first hurdle

The Indian contingent made a strong start at the AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying event in Astana, Kazakhstan with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Suranjoy Singh (52kg), and teenager Sumit Sangwan (81kg), winning their opening round bouts yesterday.


Suranjoy beat Dong-Myung Shin of Korea 16-14, while Sumit defeated Vietnam's Van Toan Luong 14-2. Suranjoy, who entered the round of 16 phase, needs to make the semi-finals to book a berth for the 2012 London Games.

Sumit, meanwhile, booked a quarter-final showdown with reigning Asian champion Hyeongkyu Kim of Korea. Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh (75kg) begins his quest for Olympics qualification in the preliminaries of the middle weight category today.u00a0
