Bengaluru: Sood brothers -- Chandril and Lakshit -- stunned India's Davis cupper Somdev Devvarman and his partner Christopher Marquis in men's doubles, while Indian qualifier Prajnesh Gunneswaran also posted an upset win in singles on day one of USD 50,000 AirAsia Open here today.
While Somdev and Marquis lost 6-7 6-7 to Sood brothers in the first round, former Olympian and Davis cupper Vishnu Vardhan and Sumit Nagal outwitted Czech-Russian pair of Michal Konecny and Alexander Kudryavtsev to storm into the last eight here at the KSLTA Courts.
After losing the first set to the Czech-Russian combination of Michal Konecny and Alexander Kudryavtsev 4-6, the Indian pair rallied brilliantly to win the second set tie-break 7-6 (4) and then clinched the decider 10-6.
But top seeds Divij Sharan and Maximillian Neuchrist of Austria were sent packing by the unseeded Uzbek-Cyprus pair of Petros Chrysochos and Temur Ismailov. In singles, Gunneswaran demolished former Indian national champion and wild card entrant Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash 6-3 6-4.
But India's N Vijay Sundar Prashanth lost to fifth seed Yannick Mertens of Belgium 2-6 2-6. Tournament top seed Adrian Menendez-Maceiras of Spain stormed into the last 16 after defeating qualifier Petros Chrysochos of Cypres 6-4 6-4 in the first round. Sixth seeded Ti Chen of Taipei outplayed Uzbekistan qualifier Temur Ismailov 6-2 6-4.
