John McEnroe is backing Andy Murray to live up to his number two seeding and land a second successive US Open final appearance at Flushing Meadows.

Britain's World No 2 has been handed a tough draw to set up a rematch of his first grand slam final appearance 12 months ago against Roger Federer.

Andy Murray lost to Roger Federer in the last year's US Open final.

The Scot starts with a first-round match-up against Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who he beat in the second round at Wimbledon, has a potential third-round tie against 6ft 10in Croat Ivo Karlovic and a possible last-eight meeting with sixth-seeded Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro.

Rafael Nadal, the man he replaced as Worldu00a0 No 2, is seeded to face him in the semi-finals.

Four-time US Open champion McEnroe believes Murray has what it takes to go the distance.

"The expectations are higher now that he's two in the world but I would be surprised if he didn't do really well."

McEnroe is not reading too much into Murray's semi-final defeat by Federer last weekend at the Cincinnati Masters.

"Psychologically it was nice but what really matters is, if they were to play each other again this year in this Slam, how well Andy has learned from last year and how much the effort he has put in these past 12 months will pay off in a best-of-five-sets match," he said.
