Russian tennis ace accompanies pal Monica Puig to distribute aid in storm-ravaged Puerto Rico
Former World No.1 Maria Sharapova was at her charitable best alongwith friend and fellow tennis player, Monica Puig, as they visited Puerto Rico to assist victims of September's deadly hurricanes -- Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria -- yesterday.
Olympic gold medallist Puig set up a fundraising page which has generated almost $150,000 for her homeland, while Sharapova
promised to share all profit from the internet sales of her million dollar Sugarpova candy business for the remainder of 2017 towards relief work.
Sharapova and Puig distributed supplies like solar powered light and radio units, gas stoves, propane cylinders and medicines to San Jorge's Children's Hospital. Over 200 cell phones were also donated by ATT, Puig's sponsor, as well as pre-packed bags of
groceries handed out by Red Cross and the Ricky Martin Foundation. "Thousands of supplies handed out in Loiza. 1250 cooking stoves, 3000 propane cylinders for the stoves 1000 solar powered lamps," Sharapova wrote on her Twitter handle.
"We are professional tennis players but at the end of the day, we are human. We feel their pain and want to share these moments with them," she added.
