Gautam Shukla defends his U-12 judo title with ease

Gautam Shukla of St Anne's High School (Malad) defended his Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school boys U-12 judo title at the District Sports Office (DSO) Sports Complex in Dharavi yesterday.

The 11-year-old scored an ippon against Ishaan Shetty of Dhirubhai Ambani International (BKC) in the final of the U-36 kg category to win the gold medal. Ved Podar of Jankidevi Public School (Andheri) won bronze. Meanwhile, choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan's triplets won medals in the U-8 category.

In the boys' U-8 final of the U-18 kg category, Farah's son Czar of Dhirubhai Ambani International (BKC) beat Dhruv Shirali of Bombay Scottish to win gold.

In the girls U-8 finals, her daughters Diva lost to Anya Pitale to win a silver (U-21 kg), and Anya lost to Shubha Khamkar to settle for a silver (U-18 kg category).

Ippon explained...
In judo, the objective is to score an ippon (one full point). Once an ippon is obtained, the competition ends. An ippon can be scored by one of the following methods: Skillfully throwing your opponent largely on his back with considerable force; Pinning your opponent for few seconds; If your opponent gives up; If your opponent is disqualified; Earning two waza-ari (half point).
