Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's late-night heroics proved to be in vain as he suffered his first opening-round loss at a Grand Slam in a decade. The Frenchman lost 7-5 6-4 6-7 (6/8) 6-4 to World No. 91 Renzo Olivot.
Meanwhile, title favourite Rafael Nadal looked in ominous form as he eased past Dutchman Robin Haase 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.
Earlier, defending champ Novak Djokovic has yet to hit top form but progressed comfortably through to round three with a 6-1 6-4 6-3 victory over Joao Sousa.
