Budapest: Daniel Ricciardo dominated the opening day of practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix yesterday, topping both sessions for former champions Red Bull to set up a tantalising three-way battle for victory on Sunday.

Aided by a raft of updates on his car, the Australian set a benchmark time of one minute, 18.455 seconds on a hot and sunny afternoon at the Hungaroring race track after also having set the pace in the morning. World championship leader Sebastian Vettel was second, 0.183 seconds behind, with Valtteri Bottas third for Mercedes, 0.201 seconds off the pace.

Lewis Hamilton, who trails Vettel by just one point in the standings and goes into the weekend as favourite to seize the title.
