Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Manchester United is in doubt after he was dropped from the squad for Saturday's clash against Chelsea following his tantrum against Tottenham.
Ronaldo stormed down the Old Trafford tunnel with several minutes remaining in United's 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday. United manager Erik ten Hag said he would "deal with" the issue on Thursday and Ronaldo was seen driving into United's Carrington training headquarters before the announcement of his punishment. It is believed Ten Hag's decision to remove Ronaldo from the squad for the Chelsea fixture has the full backing of the United chiefs, who are weighing up a decision on the player's long-term future after the disciplinary issue. United will have to wait till January 1 the transfer window reopens before selling Ronaldo, whose huge salary could prove a stumbling block to potential buyers.
Disappointed by United's failure to qualify for the Champions League, Ronaldo has been trying to engineer a move away since the end of last season, but found no offers from Europe's elite.
On Friday, Ten Hag revealed that Ronaldo had refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham. The two held talks on Friday and Ten Hag said that the Portugal striker had to be disciplined for the sake of the culture within the team, having already been critical of the player and some of his teammates for leaving a pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano early in July. "I have to set standards and values, and control them. I set a warning at the start of the season, and the next time there has to be consequences," he said.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo took to social media to explain his behaviour in the Tottenham game.

"I've always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters that grew in all the teams that I've represented. Unfortunately that's not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment [gets] the best of us," wrote Ronaldo, who trained away from the first team on Friday.
