The Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) has decided to institute two trophies in honour of the late Anslem Alphonso. Alphonso, 65, who served the schools' sports body in various capacities since 1993, passed away on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

"Anslem has served MSSA across the last 25 years in various capacities. He joined MSSA in its centenary year in 1993 as boxing secretary and served till September 2006. He also handled football in 2000-2001. He was then elected to serve as martial arts (judo) secretary for two years (2011, 2012). He again took charge of football for two years (2013, 2014) and thereafter was in-charge of squash till date," MSSA President Fr Jude Rodrigues told mid-day.com.

The trophies will be instituted in the two sporting disciplines that Alphonso was most passionate about. "MSSA has decided to institute two pure silver trophies in Anslem's name, one in boxing and the other in squash. He served these two sports the most.

The trophies will have his photograph embossed on them," said Fr Jude, adding that he knew Alphonso on a personal level: "Anslem was a cheerful and generous person. Beyond his sports administrative duties, he was our unofficial chef at MSSA's social gatherings given his impressive culinary skills. His passing is a big loss to MSSA. We will all miss him dearly."
