According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), three men entered the house and one of them demanded Meyiwa's phone. There was an altercation and a shot was fired.

Police spokesperson Neville Malila said at this stage there were not any leads but added that police were working around the clock to find the suspects.

President Jacob Zuma Monday expressed shock, sadness and outrage at the death of Meyiwa, who also played for South African club Orlando Pirates.

"We mourn the death of this young footballer and team leader whose life has been taken away at the prime of his career. Words cannot express the nation's shock at this loss. We wish to extend, on behalf of government and all the people of South Africa, our words of condolence to his family and relatives, his friends and peers in the football game, his club Orlando Pirates and our national team as well as the football fraternity as a whole," Zuma said.

"The law enforcement authorities must leave no stone unturned in finding his killers and bring them to justice. May his soul rest in peace."
