Soham Morye showed good athleticism and brilliant finishing skills by scoring two goals and steer St Xavier's (Fort) to a convincing 2-0 win against NSS Hill Spring (Tardeo) during the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA)-organised boys' U-16 Div-II inter-school football tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.
Soham, 14, the spearhead of the St Xavier's attack timed his charge perfectly to meet Hanan Chougle's low centre from the left in the ninth minute. Seven minutes later, he produced a superb effort to score the second goal.
Soham, with his back to the opponents' goal, trapped skipper Dhruv Bhadricha's forward pass and quickly swirled around and unleashed a rasping drive from the top of the box to the goalkeeper's right-hand corner to double St Xavier's lead.
Earlier, St Xavier's Boys Academy (Churchgate) scored an early goal and went on to overcome St Lawrence (Borivli) 1-0. Striker Saad Loya netted the lone goal in the fourth minute. In another match, Faiz Shaikh capitalised on goalkeeper Lalwani's lapse to score the lone goal in leading Hansraj Moraraji Public School to a narrow 1-0 win against Lilavati Poddar (Santacruz).
