St Mary's SSC (Mazagaon) and Dominic Savio (Andheri) marched into the boys' U-16 Div I final of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school football tournament yesterday. In semi-final, St Mary's struck midway through the second session to overcome Jamnabai Narsee 1-0, while Dominic Savio scored two late goals to blank St Francis D'Assisi (Borivli) 2-0 at Azad Maidan yesterday.
St Mary's were well organised in both attack and defence. They enjoyed the lion's share of the exchanges and should have won by a bigger margin. They finally found the mark when Daniyal Ansari headed home the rebound after Jamnabai goalkeeper Tanisk Sarwagh had blocked Athar Ansari's free-kick.
Dominic Savio and D'Assisi were evenly matched and both worked hard to break down each other's defences. The Andheri schoolboys managed to get the first breakthrough when skipper Duane D'Souza twisted and turned past a rival defender and unleashed a left-footer into the top right corner in the 55th minute. Duane was again on target as he picked up a pass on the left before shooting past D'Assisi goalkeeper Dhiraj Singh in the third minute of additional period to seal the win. The final will be played on August 9.
