Shreyas Iyer was born in a South Indian family in Mumbai on December 6, 1994.

Shreyas Iyer's father is Santosh Iyer is a Tamilian from Kerala, and his mother Rohini Iyer is a Mangalorean Tulu.

In an interview a few years ago, Shreyas Iyer had revealed that his ancestors are from Thrissur, Kerala.

Shreyas Iyer's talent was unearthed by cricket coach Pravin Amre when he was playing at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana.

Shreyas Iyer studied at college at Podar in Mumbai and captained his college to several inter-collegiate cricket trophies.

Shreyas Iyer started off his IPL career when he was selected in the 2015 IPL season by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for Rs. 2.6 crore.

Making his IPL debut in 2015,  Shreyas Iyer played 14 matches scoring 439 runs at an average of 33.76 and strike rate of 128.36. His top score was 83.

Shreyas Iyer won the Emerging Player of the Year in IPL 2015 for scoring 439 runs in his maiden IPL season.

At IPL 2016, Shreyas Iyer played just 6 matches with 30 runs averaging at 5. His top score was 19.

At IPL 2017, Shreyas Iyer came back with 338 runs in 12 matches averaging at 33.80 with a strike rate of 139.09. He made his all-time IPL top score of 96 that year.

At IPL 2018, Shreyas Iyer scored 411 runs in 14 matches with an average of 37.36 and strike rate of 132.58. He scored 4 fifties in this season, the most in a single season by him.

In IPL 2018, after Delhi Capitals lost the first six matches under Gautam Gambhir's leadership, Shreyas Iyer took over as captain of the team for the rest of the season.

At IPL 2019, Shreyas Iyer performed even better by scoring 463 runs. Iyer's average was 30.86 and strike rate of 119.94. He scored a total of 3 fifties in this season.

At IPL 2020, Shreyas Iyer was the captain of Delhi Capitals and had the best season in his career. He led DC to their first-ever IPL final in 13 years. He was also the fourth-highest run-scorer at IPL 2020.

In his IPL career, Shreyas Iyer has played a total of 79 matches with 2,200 runs scored at a batting average of 31.42 and strike rate of 126.07. Iyer has 16 fifties under his belt with a top score of 96.

Shreyas Iyer has also played 21 ODIs for Team India and has scored 807 runs at a healthy average of 44.83. Shreyas Iyer's highest score is his only ton - 103 - and he also has 8 fifties.

Shreyas Iyer has played 23 T20Is for Team India with 429 runs to his name at an average of 28.60. Iyer's top score is 62.

Touted as the future of Indian cricket, Shreyas Iyer along with youngsters Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant carry the responsibility of Delhi Capitals on their shoulders.
