West Indies captain Shai Hope won the toss and opted to bowl. Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill opened for the visitors.
Both the openers gave India a strong start as Ishan (55) scored a half-century and Shubman Gill scored a decent 34 before being dismissed by Romario Shepherd and Gudakesh Motie respectively.
However, the Indian team management’s decision to rest skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli in order to give a chance to other players backfired as the none of the middle-order batters could cope with the pace, bounce and turn. Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Umran Malik and Mukesh Kumar were all dismissed for single-digit scores.
Suryakumar Yadav gave hopes for revival but he was caught out by Alick Athanaze off Gudakesh Motie’s ball. Motie (3/36 in 9.5 overs) and Romario Shepherd (3/37 in 8 overs) headlined West Indies' efforts to bowl out India for 181.
West Indies batters survived a lively spell from Shardul Thakur (3/42 in 8 overs) before skipper Shai Hope (63 not out, 80 balls) and Keacy Carty (48 not out, 65 balls) added 91 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket to successfully chase the target in 36.4 overs and level the series 1-1.
