Azhar Mahmood is a former Pakistani cricketer who played for the national side as a bowling all-rounder from the mid-90s to mid-2000s.

Although Azhar Mahmood's father was opposed to him playing cricket, he later encouraged him to pursue his dream after seeing what he was accomplishing in his early days.

Azhar Mahmood made his ODI debut for Pakistan on September 16, 1996, against India.

Azhar Mahmood played his last ODI match on 17 March 2007 against Ireland.

In his ODI career, Azhar Mahmood played 143 matches taking 123 wickets at an average of 39.13. His best bowling figures were 6/18.

Azhar Mahmood made his Test debut for Pakistan a year later on October 6, 1997 vs South Africa.

Azhar Mahmood played his final Test on May 31, 2001, against England.

Azhar Mahmood played a total of 21 Tests taking 39 wickets at an average of 35.94. His best figures were 4/50.

Although Azhar Mahmood made an entry into the Pakistan side as a bowler, he went on to impress his teammates, captain and coach with his batting skills and was thus termed an all-rounder.

Azhar Mahmood got married to Ebba Qureshi in 2003.

Following him being granted citizenship, Azhar Mahmood was selected to play in the Indian Premier League in the 2012 season.

Azhar Mahmood played for the IPL franchises Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders.

In his IPL career, Azhar Mahmood played 23 matches with taking 29 wickets and scoring 388 runs. His highest score was 80, while his best bowling was 3/20.

Besides IPL, Azhar Mahmood also played for other domestic franchises like Islamabad Leopards, Dhaka Gladiators, Sydney Thunder, Barbados Tridents, Cape Cobras, Barisal Burners and Islamabad United.

In November 2016, Azhar Mahmood was appointed as bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team. He retired from his post in 2019.
