WT20 Final: 15 men put adversity behind, says Darren Sammy

Kolkata: Carlos Brathwaite, who struck four sixes in the final to chase down 19 from the final over, was speechless after West Indies became the first team to win ICC World T20 title for the second time at the Eden Gardens here yesterday.

Riding on Marlon Samules' 85 and Brathwaite's 10-ball 34, West Indies chased down England's 155-9 with two balls to spare.

"Want to give thanks to God… that was an amazing knock from Marlon. He took responsibility and played a fantastic knock. I can't really express how much of a top knock that was. The U-19s did it, the girls did it, and now us." Brathwaite said moments after hitting England pacer Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes in the last over to seal the win.

WI skipper Darren Sammy lauded his players for putting the problems back home behind them. "People were wondering whether we would play this tournament. We had issues with the board… Mark Nicholas (former England player) called us 'players with no brain'.

"But all of us came together, these 15 men put adversity aside, played this type of cricket in front of such passionate fans. It was tremendous. I want to thank the coaching team, Phil Simmons. We had a new manager in this tournament. Got to give credit to the entire team here. This is for all the fans in the Caribbean. I don't know when I'm going to be playing for West Indies again, I want to thank my team, thank my coaching staff. This is for the champions," said Sammy.
