When Broad got going against India

ENGLAND pacer Stuart Broad on Saturday announced his retirement from professional cricket. The 37-year-old will bring the curtains down on a 17-year international career after the ongoing fifth and final Ashes Test against Australia.

The right-arm medium pacer has claimed 602 wickets in 167 Test matches, while he has accounted for 178 and 65 dismissals in 121 ODIs and 56 T20Is respectively.

Against India, Broad claimed 74 wickets in 24 Test matches, including a hat-trick in the second Test at Nottingham in 2011, which England won by a massive 319-run margin to lead the four-match series 2-0. Broad's Nottingham magic will always haunt India. The pacer single-handedly took the game away from the visitors, not only with his bowling, but also his quickfire batting.

England batting first, were struggling at 88-6, they were later reduced to 124-8, but the hosts managed to post 221 all out, thanks to Broad's 66-ball 64. His innings was laced with nine fours. In reply, India looked comfortable at 273-5, before the local boy turned the match in England's favour with his maiden Test hat-trick. Broad finished the innings with his then career-best Test figures of 6-46. He broke India's backbone with 5-5 in the final spell as the visitors collapsed from 267-4 to 288 all out.

Broad repeated his magic with the bat. He counter-attacked the Indian bowlers with an aggressive 32-ball 44, including five fours and two maximums, to help England score a massive 544 all out and set a 478-run target.

Broad dismissed first innings centurion and opener Rahul Dravid for just six, while accounting for the final wicket of S Sreesanth.

He ended the series as the highest wicket-taker (25).
