The Mallakhamb Federation of India (MFI) and its 35 state units are busy spreading the message of social distancing and the importance of using masks to battle the Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country.

They are also helping the needy in different cities by distributing fruits, groceries, masks and sanitisers through their several state unit officials, coaches and players.

Chembur-based Sunil Gangawne, who was the India's men's team coach during the first Mallakhamb World Championship in 2019, has visited several places across the city to help the poor.

"I think it is the duty of every sportsperson to spread awareness and help people with necessary things in these tough times. Most of the people like autorickshaw drivers and small-time workers are using the same mask for several days. So we gave them more masks and sanitisers to highlight the importance of their own as well as that of others' safety," Gangawne told mid-day on Wednesday.

MFI president Dr Ramesh Indoliya revealed that their officials and well wishers have distributed over one lakh masks apart from grocery items. "I am grateful to all the state associations and officials of MFI, who took this initiative. We have distributed more than one lakh masks and grocery items, including soap, toothpaste, biscuits, washing powder, soyabean, dal, sugar and tea powder along with fruits. The aim was to make people aware about the current situation and help them," said Indoliya from Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
