With the BCCI contemplating holding the Ranji Trophy before the Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchises are not happy with this decision.

It is understood that they have expressed their concerns to the BCCI and urged them not to hold the premier first-class tournament before the cash-rich T20 league as they fear injuries could jeopardise their teams.

The BCCI office-bearers on Thursday held a meeting to discuss conducting the domestic season with COVID-19 cases dropping in the country.

The office-bearers couldn't arrive at any decision during the meeting. "We are still exploring different possibilities to conduct the Ranji Trophy. It is a very important tournament for us and we will explore all options. However, it is not an easy task as the situation is still quite fluid with COVID-19. In some states, it is peaking. Then, there are various state government protocols to be followed. It is quite challenging," an official told mid-day.

When asked whether the BCCI is paying heed to the franchisees' concerns, the official said: "The IPL teams have no right to dictate. Ranji Trophy does not come under their purview. Our responsibility is not just to conduct the IPL. All other tournaments are equally important for the BCCI."

The BCCI is racing against time to conduct the league stage (around 35 days) of the Ranji Trophy before the IPL. Discussions are on about the groups and on the feasibility of having a zonal format.
