Dilip Kumar
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has hailed the late Dilip Kumar for his amazing humility and warmth.
The Indian cinema icon passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday at the age of 98.
Gavaskar recalled how he first saw Dilip Kumar while travelling in a school bus. "There was one instance that is etched in my mind. We were in our school bus just before Marine Lines station and the driver of our bus excitedly told us that Dilip Kumar was in the car in front of us. All of us schoolboys came to the front of the bus and were screaming his name and Dilip Saab turned in his seat, looked back at us and gave such a huge smile and a wave that even though at that stage most of us had never seen a film of his, we became his fans for life. There were several occasions thereafter too - to spend a few minutes with him and every single time, his humility and his warmth was simply amazing," Gavaskar wrote in his column which appeared in mid-day today.
The Indian cricket legend also mourned the passing away of a member of the BCCI TV production team, Sitender 'Sony' Nirankari.
"In the sudden, unexpected passing away of Sitender 'Sony' Nirankari, the BCCI TV production has lost one of its stalwarts. Sony's was the voice the commentators and cameramen and technical staff heard in their ears as he directed the telecast," wrote Gavaskar.
