Young Maharashtra batsman Pawan Shah smashed 282, the second highest individual score in U-19 internationals, along with six consecutive boundaries in an over as India posted a mammoth 613-8 against Sri Lanka on the second day of the final Youth Test yesterday.
India declared when Shah, 18, from Pune, was dismissed after missing out on a triple hundred by 18 runs. His 282 came off 332 balls with 33 boundaries and a six in just under seven hours. He failed to beat Australian Clinton Peake's 304 not out against India in Melbourne in 1995, which is still the highest score at this U-19 level. "Six boundaries in an over went in good flow while scoring a double century. It feels good, but I am not satisfied yet. I have to perform consistently," Pawan told mid-day from Colombo yesterday.
Pawan added 263 runs for the second wicket with Atharva Taide (177) and another 167 runs with Nikhil Wadhera (64). In reply, Sri Lanka were 140 for 4 at stumps with left-arm seamer Mohit Jangra picking up three for 43. Being a victim of a run out dismissal, Pawan added: "It was a wrong call from my side. I am very disheartened to miss out on an opportunity to score a triple hundred, but it is part of the game. I had dreamt of scoring a triple century for India. Maybe, next time."
Pawan's innings brought joy to his family. "He looked all set to break the world record, but he lost his patience and was unfortunately run out. Honestly, we never expected such a huge score from him," Pawan's father, Hukum said from Pune.
