It was very clear from day one that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was tactfully using Varun. It is shameful that the cadre-based party needs the Gandhi scion as its poster-boy to articulate its views on hardline Hinduism.

The entire drama was written with the primary aim of gaining cheap publicity to counter the supposedly increasing popularity of Rahul Gandhi. But their intended climax was rather spoiled by BSP leader Mayawati.

By booking Varun under the NSA, she provided an unexpected anti-climax to the story. The BJP should learn its lesson from the Varun episode.
