In the wake of a PTI report that said Gavaskar has asked for Rs 1.90 crore "as remuneration for rendering his services as president BCCI IPL during the seventh edition of the cash-rich league last year," Gavaskar revealed to mid-day yesterday that he had initially left it to the BCCI to decide the amount.

"Mr Sanjay Patel, the former BCCI secretary had asked me to write to BCCI about the amount of compensation for missing out on my various media engagements on my appointment as interim president BCCI IPL by the Hon Supreme Court. I had left it to the BCCI, writing to them last year that they can give whatever they thought fit.
"Perhaps since the BCCI had other pressing matters on its hand, no decision was taken.

"The current dispensation told me that they couldn't decide on the figure by themselves and asked me to give them one. My office which handles my columns and so knows how many columns and what else I missed then wrote to BCCI with a figure. Now it's up to BCCI to take a call."

Meanwhile, a BCCI source told PTI, "he (Gavaskar) needs to be compensated as there is a SC directive and we need to follow that. But this letter will be placed before the finance committee, which will approve an amount. The amount that Gavaskar would get could be exactly what he has demanded or less depending upon what finance committee's recommendations are."
