Underdogs Maharashtra made a late burst in the third and fourth quarters after running their formidable opponents close in the previous two quarters to go down 61-64 in their opening encounter of the competition.


The teams were tied at 15-15 at the end of the opening quarter before Services led 30-25 at half-time in a high-quality contest.

With time ticking away, the army men held on dearly to their three-point lead with S Subbaiah top scoring with 24 points.

ONGC rallied to overcome Western Railway 67-60 in another thrilling men's encounter after trailing 22-31 at half-time.

With just 24 seconds remaining, W Railways were well in the game as they trailed by just three points at 60-63 to set the stage for a pulsating finish. But ONGC earned crucial free throws in the dying seconds to swell their tally and seal the issue.
