Sydney: Ever heard of a cricket commentator doing duty from his living room? That's what Australia's Channel Nine wants celebrated commentator Richie Benaud to do during the India vs Australia Test series this summer.
Richie Benaud
Benaud (83) has not been in a commentary position ever since he met with a car accident while on his way home from a round of golf last October.
But Channel Nine boss David Gyngell told the Sydney Morning Herald that he has requested Benaud to commentate from his Coogee (New South Wales) home for the Test series that starts in December.
Armchair caller
"That's what I've put to him. If he's not up to calling from the ground this summer, I'd like him to call from home. He'd be the ultimate armchair caller from the couch, wouldn't he?
"I'd prefer to have him calling at the ground, but I would say that will be difficult. If I have my way, he will be calling it from his home but it is completely his decision," Gyngell said.
If fit, Benaud would have been at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday when 15 broadcasters and reporters were inducted into the ground's Media Hall
of Honour.
