Rookie opening batsman Prithvi Shaw faced up to Mumbai's pace attack in the nets at the Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) Bandra-Kurla Complex ground yesterday, a day after being picked in the Mumbai squad to take on Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy semi-final at Rajkot from Sunday.

Shaw (17), it is learnt played Shardul Thakur & Co. competently and showed tremendous confidence which pleased head coach Chandrakant Pandit as well as chief selector Milind Rege.

He batted for 35-40 minutes and showed no signs of discomfort or nerves. However, whether he makes the final XI in Rajkot will only be decided when the team reaches the Saurashtra town.

Shaw has a great opportunity to emulate the debut season success of Sachin Tendulkar (1988-89), Amol Muzumdar (1993-94) and Wasim Jaffer (1996-97), all of whom got picked in their teens.
