Joe Root's catch, held by pacer Umesh Yadav off his own bowling in the 81st over of the day at Rajkot was one of the talking points on the opening day of the India vs England Test series. The field umpire referred it to third umpire Rod Tucker, who was satisfied with the catch.

The commentators compared this catch with South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs, who caught Steve Waugh at mid-wicket off Lance Klusener but dropped the catch after he threw it in the air during a spontaneous celebration at Leeds in the 1999 World Cup.

"Mine happened quicker than Yadav's," Gibbs said after watching a clip of Yadav's catch. "There's not much difference between Yadav's and my catch, but he held on to the ball slightly longer than I did. He actually had control of the ball and threw it in the air whereas I wanted to throw it up but dropped it. Mine eventuated in a not out, but Yadav's catch was valid. The umpires got it right both times."
